Walks From the Cabin

Jervaulx Abbey Loop
11.3km // 3 hrs

This loop takes you from the cabin, along the River Ure and through the Grade I-listed Jervaulx Abbey - which can be seen from your cabin. On sunny days, we recommend stopping off at Brymor Dairy Farm to pick up some homemade Yorkshire ice cream.

Rest + Wild to Masham 
8km // 2 hrs 

Stroll into the picturesque market town of Masham via Lower Sutton with this route. This walk will take you two hours from the cabins. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants in Masham you can refuel at before your walk back.

Places Worth Visiting

Jervaulx Abbey | 6 minutes from the cabin | An enchanting Grade I-listed Abbey ruins which the cabins overlook, it is among the nation's largest privately owned Cistercian Abbeys. Walk down to the abbey ruins from the cabin and enjoy the on-site tea room. Occasionally the Abbey can be closed for weddings, so do check the website before heading off. 

Brymor Dairy | 7 minutes from the cabin | Sample some of Yorkshire finest ice cream, just a stone's throw from the cabin. Using milk from cows grazing across the Dales, this ice cream parlour handmakes its ice cream on the working farm. We recommend picking up an ice cream and walking down to the Jervaulx Abbey. From 15th July 2024, a maize maze will open on the farm. 

Theakston Brewery Tour | 12 minutes from the cabin | Just down the road from the cabins, in Masham, you’ll find ​​ one of the oldest working breweries in the country: Theakston Brewery. We recommend sampling their iconic beer: the Theakston Old Peculier. Tours can be booked online 48 hours prior to arrival or phone up for same day bookings.

Druid’s Temple | 15 minutes from the cabin | Interestingly, Druid’s Temple, is not actually a temple, but a nineteenth century folly styled after stone circles and well known prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge. It was built to alleviate local unemployment, allowing William Danby, a wealthy landowner of the time to pay workers a shilling a day for their labour. 

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden | 35 minutes from the cabin | Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this Yorkshire treasure features a 12th-century abbey ruins and an 18th-century Georgian water garden with lakes, canals, temples, and a deer park.

Brimham Rocks | 40 minutes from the cabin | Explore the dramatic moorland formations around Brimham Rocks. Whether you’re keen to go climbing, cycling or walking, there’s plenty of adventures to be had around these iconic rock formations. 

Hardraw Force Waterfall | 45 minutes from the cabin | Hardraw is England’s largest single drop waterfall, a reputed 100 foot. If you’re feeling adventurous you can take the upper path around the top of the waterfall. In summer time you can take a dip in the natural pool.

Linton Falls | 1 hr from the cabin | A popular waterfall on the River Wharfe. Access the waterfall via a short 3km circular walk, which includes stepping stones. Located close to the picturesque village of Grassington, we recommend combining the walk with lunch, or at least a cream tea, here. 

Bolton Abbey | 1hr 10 minute from the cabin | Take a picnic and spend a day at Bolton Abbey. Explore the estate with highlights like the Augustinian Priory ruins, the stepping stones in front of the priory, and trails through Strid Wood. On sunny days, enjoy a paddle in the River Wharfe.

Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss | 1hr 20 minutes from the cabin | Discover the breathtaking beauty of the Yorkshire Dales with a visit to Malham Cove, a  natural limestone amphitheater. Just a short walk away, marvel at Gordale Scar, a dramatic ravine with towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Complete your adventure at Janet’s Foss, a serene waterfall and pool nestled in enchanting woodland.

Middleham Castle | 15 minutes from the cabin | Once the childhood residence of Richard III, Middleham Castle features a towering 12th-century keep and panoramic views over the Yorkshire Dales. Known as 'The Windsor of the North,' you can explore the historic ruins before grabbing a bite to eat in one of Middleham’s old pubs.

Wild Swimming 

  • Catrigg Force | 1 hour 20 minutes from the cabin | A waterfall and pool near Stainforth.

  • Cauldron Falls | 30 minutes from the cabin | A hidden waterfall near West Burton

  • Buckden Beck | 45 minutes from the cabin | An impressive series of waterfalls, ideal for paddling and skimming rocks. 

  • Loup Scar | 1 hr from the cabin | Ideal for swimming and cliff jumping, near Burnsall. Head to The  Red Lion pub to warm up afterwards, 

  • Ghaistrill’s Strid | 1 hour from the cabin | A narrow and rocky stretch of the River Wharfe. Don’t swim in this one if it’s been raining.

Eating + Drinking

There are a number picturesque villages close to the cabins. Below we've pulled out a few suggestions of where you can pick up a pint and enjoy some hearty local food in each of those villages.

Middleham
5 miles // 10 minute drive from the cabins

The Wensleydale Heifer | celebrating something special, or simply looking for the opportunity to sample some of Yorkshire’s finest seafood - this is the place to go.

Richard III | Dating from the seventeenth century, this local favourite is located in Middleham’s market square. 

Castle Keep Tea Room | With a selection of sandwiches and cakes, this is the perfect place to stop for a cream tea.

The Track Room Restaurant | Located within The Wensleydale Hotel, this wonderful restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you plan on visiting for dinner or Sunday lunch, they recommend pre-booking. 

The Blue Lion | A beautiful 18th-century pub serving dishes with local ingredients and real ales brewed in nearby Masham. This place has a roaring fire for winter and a garden for warmer days.

Leyburn 
7 miles // 16 minute drive from the cabins

The Black Swan | A traditional Yorkshire pub serving all the classics. We recommend trying their handmade pies. 

The Sandpiper Inn | A cosy 17th-century pub that has previously been named Yorkshire Life's Dining Pub of the Year.

Three Horse Shoes | located just down the road from Leyburn, in Wensley, this charming and historic public house also serves up delicious food made from locally sourced ingredients. 

Grassington 
27 miles // 1 hour from the cabins

The Retreat | A small tearoom serving cream teas in the day and turning into a bistro on an evening. 

The Fish Shop | Pick up some local fish and chips from this takeaway in the heart of Grassington.
